Providing Resources to Equip and Inspire your Home School

I am so excited about this upcoming school year! This will be our 1st year of homeschooling. We are almost all set with curriculum and organization. I am sure that I will probably change things around many times ones we dig in. I am also very ready for a set schedule. All of this summer running and staying up late it wearing on all of us.

I am loving all of the resources and connections available online for the hs community. I am looking forward to meeting new people and learning ideas through this site.

All that I really have left to do is sit down and figure out dates for the year when we will take breaks (holidays, vacation, & stuff). I have put this off while waiting for my husbands schedule. We are a military family so we are waiting to see if he will be getting orders to deploy. This will have an impact on when we start, stop, or have breaks.

Are there any other military families that have suggestions based on schooling around deployments? I want to make sure we are not worried with school at least 2 weeks before and a few when he returns.

I'm glad to hear that, Beth. My sister experienced the same thing when she pulled her kids out of school to homeschool them. Their attitude went back to being sweet instead of rebellious.

Thank you all for the warm welcome and great advice. I pulled my oldest out of public school right after Spring Break last year. I guess I am still having a hard time flushing the public system out of my head. The encouragement helps. I am such a planner that his schedule makes me nervous and I do not want to fall behind. I have already seen a huge difference in my children since they have been home. Its like I have my children back. The biggest bonus is that my oldest has lost the major attitude that came with moving so much and public school. He is my happy-go-lucky son again.

Welcome Beth! I agree with Susan's post. We are not a military family but I have found that planning to school all year allows us to take the days off that happen during the normal course of living. Just make sure you complete the number of hours or days required by your state, if any.

Check out the Groups. I'm sure there are several that cater to families in the military.

And most of all enjoy the journey!

Welcome to homeschooling! My husband is ex-military. What I would do is plan to homeschool throughout the year, and then take off whatever days you need to as they come up. Math lessons dictate the number of days of schooling at our house, but even then, my kids sometimes do two lessons in one day just to have an extra vacation day. :)
