Home School Me Please! HSMP!

I know the world's changing. I read an article where it turns out, the public school kids are asking to be homeschooled. In fact, there is not a chat acronym:  HSMP!  It stands for homeschool me, please! It seems that this is used in classes which are just too boring or stupid to stand where the kids text it to each other.  Funny, huh?See More

See and Spell

See and Spell - This is the last of my old technology posts which are quoted from the RetroEdTech.com history site. There's a lot there but I only got permission to quote three of their articles.  Is it a toy or an educational tool? This clever educational device certainly predates Vocab-…See More

Early Educational Computers

The Macintosh by AppleThe Mac was a major milestone in modern computing including for education. I just read the 400 page biography of Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson so I'm full of  a sense of its history. I just got this Mac 512 SE to join the retro ed tech collection.  I personally joined the ranks of the Apple fans when the Macintosh came out. I had been an early PC user…See More

Explicit Instruction

I feel like I have to collect my thoughts on what I just read. I don't know why but a friend of mine gave me an article to read. It turns out to be Chapter 1 of Effective and Efficient Teaching by Anita Archer and Charles Hughes, Copyright 2011, Guildford Press. Wow, what a weird experience it was to read those 22 pages. The first Chapter is Exploring the Foundations of Explicit Instruction. It's written to justify the idea that teachers should teach and how they should teach.  It's somewhere…See More

Studying Independence Day

We all study the 4th of July. It comes by every year and on a good years, its an uplifting, informative, educational event. I'm not talking about the educational aspects, not the social ones.   On our bad years, we drone on about how thankful they should be and the students get turned off by the sense that they are being told the same-old-stuff in the same old ways  and also, being told what they should think Ie thankful. For those of us who have read the book

Free Resources for Teaching Writing

I have another great free find: a big cache of free resources to teach writing.   Time4Writing provides free writing resources to help parents and educators teach writing more effectively (and for them, I guess, it is free advertising). The writing resources  are organized into seven main categories. Each category includes a selection of writing games, instructional videos, printable writing worksheets and other writing tools that are topic specific and related to each category. These free…See More

Speed Reading

Last week, I admitted that I care a lot about my kids' vocabulary. I got several emails that pushed the idea that literacy and reading and ultimately speed reading were just as important.  Of course, I agree. In my case, my kids absorbed phonics so simply that I've never really thought much about it but I do know that there are lots of students who need phonics help to become competent readers. My kids are not at…See More
