The Dentist

The constant ache and then sudden, excruciating pain of anything cold that ruled my last week is not something I will soon forget.Growing up, I had two traumatic experiences with dentists and consequently, I do not go to the dentist any more often than is absolutely necessary. Normally, our family goes in all together (all seven…See More

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Stuck between a rock and a hard place...somewhere nobody wants to be! We all understand that a rock is hard and immovable and who hasn't faced a 'hard place' in their lives? Whether financial, marital, physical or relational, hard places are no fun.But what happens when we change our definitions? What happens when we consider…See More

Fuzzy Brain

I don't know about everyone else but there are times when I seem to have a fuzzy brain. Usually it is a result of overcommitment, lack of sleep and middle-aged estrogen. Last night, I stood in the kitchen door flicking the light switch, trying to turn off the kitchen light. The problem was that I was flicking the hallway switch – no wonder I couldn't get it to work. How many other things are there in my life that aren't working because I am not using the right resources? Sometimes I become…See More

God's Outstretched Arms

God's Outstretched Arms Young love runs to embrace after being apart.A child holds out their arms to be cuddled by a parent.Friends hug to express concern, condolence or comfort. The phrase, “outstretched arms” brings to mind many images. For me, all of them have to do with acceptance, trust and love.…See More

I Am Thankful

Suppertime highway rush hour traffic.   Five lanes of highway, all eager to get home in this week before Christmas.  As the lanes separate to transform from highway into streets, traffic slows and gridlock halts all progress.  Doing a quick shoulder check before changing lanes, the car behind fails to notice the stopped vehicles in front...WHAM! This was my husband's drive home last…See More

Traditions or Convictions?

Have you ever noticed that between denominations and even between churches within the same denomination, there are differences in the way things are done? How about between you and your closest friends? Do you do everything the same way? If not, why not?It was brought to my attention the other day that there have been people at our church ask our pastor why I (and our daughters) wear head coverings (hats or mantillas). The simple answer is that my husband and I are convicted, based on…See More

The Pyramid

Our family photo this year had us all piled up in a pyramid on the beach with me standing behind making sure the littlest one didn't fall off the top. Dad and big brothers were on the bottom and older girls were in the middle. As I look at the picture, I can't help but think of how God fits into our family pyramid. If we put Him on…See More

Brownies Anyone?

I once heard a story about a man who had two teenage daughters. They were a happy family and they loved each other. One day, the girls came home asking their parents if they could see a popular x-rated movie in theaters. The family rule was that movies with a rating over 14 were unnecessary and the family would not watch them.…See More

Every Little Thing

Middle of November, it's balmy. The sun is shining, the air is fresh and the temperature is calling me outside. I was inspired to go for a walk. We live in a small community bordered by other small communities. There are lots of hills and, unless you are visiting, not really anywhere to go. It was a challenge trying to decide where I would walk but I laced up my sneakers (fresh and pristine from lack of use) and headed out. The longer I walked, the better I felt. It was if the day was made…See More

Creative Learning

written by Stephanie Jacksonhems@eastlink.caAny mum who has homeschooled multiple subjects for multiple ages knows what an overwhelming task it can be. Making the Most of Conference Day

Conference time is fast approaching and many moms are torn between rejoicing in the lovely weather, encouraging the children as they “finish up” for another year, pouring through catalogs to select next year's resources and trying to figure out how much it's all going to cost! Conference time can be very stressful but there are some keys to making the event both productive and enjoyable.First Things First...GET PREPARED! Sometime in early spring, I like to start in March, take a look at what…See More

Exploring, discovering, emerging, progressing, mastering: no matter how old you are or your stage of life, in some element, you are somewhere on this step by step journey.

When our children are babies, we have very few expectations. We understand that it will take time and patience, teaching and correction and lots and lots of practice for them to be able to walk, talk, feed…
