I used to thrive on days like that. Always made me feel like I got soooo much accomplished. Now? Not so much. I like my quiet routine. I think I'm turning into a hermit! :-)

Morning Mayhem

By Mary FriedemanEver have one of those days that seem promising until all your plans quickly collapse? Today was like that at our house. When the dust settled, all I could think of were the words of the old spiritual, “My Lord, What a Morning!” Of course, that song is about the second coming of Christ; but if He weren’t present in my life, our home, and our homeschool every day, I would surely lose it on days like this.Things got off to a good start. Washing machine and dishwasher both loaded…See More

Thanks for the recipe!  I'm eager to try it!  We're all shivering here in the mornings til the house comes back up "to temperature."  It's been in the high teens/low 20s outside in the mornings (we live near…

Shelia, that seems to be something we always find , stray photos. Ive gotten to the place where I buy photo albums whenever they are cheap and put pics in them~random or whatever just so they are protected! Im grateful for the memories but they can…

We have two such areas in our home.  the first is my working desk; the second is our bedroom, replete with a large steamer trunk full of those pesky photos waiting for albums.  Maybe we need some organizational tips from Susan :-) !!

That's great that God has provided a large storage closet in your new church building. It sounds like you needed it.

I Remember Mama

by Mary FriedemanA couple of weeks ago, I posted a blog wherein I referenced my mother, who went to heaven in October 2006. Below is something I wrote a few years after her death. It's a good reminder to me, as a mom, of the beautiful legacy of eternal consequence that each one of us has the potential to create, in the lives of our families and others whom we touch.I’ve often said that Mama would have made a fabulous homeschooler. Back in the 60’s and 70’s, the years when she was primarily…See More

You can probably find a recording of "Peter and the Wolf" at the library. It's a musical composition specifically for children and is good for learning to recognize different instruments. Another good recording is "Peter Ustinov…

A Herculean Task

By Mary FriedemanNight before last we undecorated the Christmas tree. That's actually a little early for us; since our Christmas celebration, including opening gifts, lasts for the entire twelve days of Christmas, the tree usually stays up until January 6. But that’s too late to drop it off for our city’s recycling program, where they convert the trees to mulch. So this year we moved the date up a bit.It is a task that I’ve traditionally dreaded. We always buy a large (9-foot), full,…See More

Cold Weather Reveille

By Mary Friedeman

Frosty winter mornings can pose a special challenge to waking sleepy students. Our definition of cold weather here in the Deep South might elicit a chuckle from some of our northern-dwelling friends; but chilly temps have a tendency to make all of us want to snuggle deeper under the covers rather than leap…

Does anyone else have these around the house? Little projects that you just can’t seem to get around to tackling, at least while school is in session? For me, two examples would be paperwork in need of filing (receipts,…

I mentioned to Mrs. Peggy Brock, First Baptist Church Biloxi (MS) Children's Director, about your and Matt's book Discipleship in the Home and told her who you two were. I thought it would be a good one to use in one of our church discipleship training classes. Well she ordered it and is reviewing it - with positive comments back to me! In the meantime I went ahead and got a copy also (couldn't wait for her to set up a class at church). mark and i are going through it now.

Hi Mary,

I sent a friend request because I was trying to figure out a way to ask you a question... and then discovered this 'comment wall,' so I'll try it also. (I'm not a techie, as you can tell!) I am wondering if you can direct me to a site on which I could purchase copies of the Children's Catechism mentioned on your husband's recommended reading list (on inthefight.com). He mentions that it's available to buy at Wesley Biblical Seminary, but I went to that sight and couldn't find an link there for buying a copy. Did he mean "in person" at the seminary? Or should I call the seminary directly? I also checked on Amazon and found other books by your husband, but not the catechism. If it's not available to those of us farther away, is there another one you could recommend? Is "Hidden in the Heart" based on others of the 'classic' catechisms, and if so, which one/s? I grew up in the Mennonite church and now attend a 'Bible Church' of Baptistic doctrine, but while I studied a 'confession of faith' in the Mennonite church, I don't know of a children's catechism, per se, and am not familiar with using one. If you've never written a blog post about your family's use of such, I would be interested in reading one... if you feel so led. :-) Blessings! Gwenyth P.S. I recently purchased and am reading/enjoying "Green Leaf in Drought" by Isobel Kuhn! Thanks for the recommendation!
