Special Needs Homeschooling

My name is Heather. My husband, Christopher and I have been married for 13 wonderful years. We have been blessed with 5 children, with 3 angels awaiting us in Heaven.

We began our homeschooling journey 10+ years ago. Since that day we have found out that our children and I have a mitochondrial disorder. It causes a large variety of medical and learning problems. As the years passed it was obvious that I too had serious health issues.

This has brought our homeschooling journey to many unexpected places. We have homeschooled in the hospital, many a doctor’s office, and therapy parking lots. Four of the kids are on the autism spectrum and have varying levels of sensory issues. The wide variety of problems the children have dealt with or are dealing with has left me uniquely positioned to cover first hand a large variety of problems.

The Lord is guiding us through this as He has every other storm we have faced. If I can pass on one lesson it is to listen to God. He is the goal at the end of the homeschooling journey.

My husband and I have been praying for years that our trials could be put to the Lord's glory.

God bless my friends!

Word Family Eggs

Posted on May 1, 2012 at 3:35pm 4 Comments

Hello all! I have a quick and easy tool for teaching reading.

On Pinterest I saw an egg that had letters and word family ending attached by tape to it. I thought about that, but in my family the tape would most likely get eaten off or chewed on. So I changed things a bit to match the needs of my family and here is what I came up with.

I took a permanent marker…

The Last Christmas?

Posted on December 4, 2010 at 5:26pm 0 Comments

One Last Christmas, the title to a new Matthew West song struck me to

the core. I have watched the video several times now and I am shaking.

The shock of the story about a little boy that bravely battled cancer

and sadly lost. The story of parents and a town that gave all they

could. All to give this little boy one last Christmas...

This story stirs in me thoughts that I work hard to bury...deep. Is this

the last Christmas? Any parent of a child with a life… Continue

Years of uncertainty are at rest.

If you have dealt with a health problem that has no diagnosis you will understand. For over 6 years Chris and I have been searching for an answer. We knew several of our children had autism, immune problems,

muscle problems, GI problems and seizures to name a few. When we would

get one problem worked out another would crop up. It was like chasing a

wild fire across a windy wheat field. It seemed to be always just out of

our reach.

The problems also defied…

I am honored to be your friend. I'm not sure if you've read my love story on my blog here on the Homeschool Channel, but God has given me back my honeymoon, and I'm so grateful. My Bahamas pictures are on facebook, in case you're curious how it went, with the hurricane and all. I'm still smiling at the goodness of God.

Eric has been tested for all the types of mito he showed any possible symptom for...that's why it's mito encephalomyopathy unspecified. He's not had a stroke though he was tested for that type because of other symptoms...and still we wait.

Hi, Heather, Thanks for the invite. Eric's mito was confirmed with a muscle biopsy...the actual biopsy done 11-6-06 and the results confirmed on Valentine's Day, 2007. Do ya'll see a mito specialist?
It's tough watching the disease progress...what ages are your children?

Who are your family members, and what was your maiden name? My parents are Bob & Judy Brooks, although my dad went to be with the Lord 4 years ago. I graduated from West Holmes in 1984; where did you go to school?

I saw that you were born in Mansfield; are you familiar with a little town called Big Prairie? It is south of Wooster and it is my hometown. I also wanted to tell you that I find your biography interesting. How do you adapt your curriculum for your children?
