What are the key elements to look for when scouting a location for your garden plot?
Great thinking Shella! I appreciate you passing it along :) I don't know what happened, w/ my email, but I see I've missed a ton of posts! You were asking about a steam canner. Well, one older woman raved about them to me, so we were all set to get one, but after reading the reviews and safety info, I think we'll stick w/ the good ol' water bath and pressure canner...However, we are all set to buy a steam juicer for our berries to make jelly this summer!

This is a recipe for a cake we have been making in our home for over a year. Made with nothing perishable such as eggs, milk or butter its a good recipe to have on hand just in case.
Hi Shelia,
We were able to go to the county tax office and get the owners name and address. So we are going to write her a letter with our offer and see what she says. I didnt know it was that easy to find out who owned a plot of land.
We found another piece of land yesterday that is about 15 miles from the first property. Its about 10 acres and has two boarded up houses on it. One looks liveable with a little work. There are two barnes on the property already but one needs to be torn down. All the fences need to be redone on this one unlike the other first one. This one didnt have an address on it so we had to drive around and find all the neighboring address we could to get an idea of what to ask about when we ask the tax office. It didnt have any for sale signs so hopefully they want to just get it off there hands. This one has way more trees than the first property which gives more firewood opportunities.
Our 3rd option which looks like what we are leaning on is to buy one of these 1-2 acre plots uncleared out cash for about 3-6 grand and drop a nice double wide on it. Then we can aquire more acres over time. With September being our deadline cause thats when our lease is up. Option three seems the most realistic. I stay in prayer about.

Erin - what ever became of your dream homestead?

Has anyone done steam canning? I was looking at buying a steam canner but don't no any thing about the effectiveness of this method.
Comment by J.Needham on March 19, 2012 at 3:20pm Just wanted to share a link to a free teleclass to teach homeschoolers how to make a solar oven. Great thing to know if you need to cook without electricity someday. I haven't done this myself, but as soon as I can get the supplies together I'd like to try it with my kids.

Thanks Shelia, I will be working on that this week. I just know it had to be a way to at least have them ask. Its been sitting for a year I am sure they want something for the land even if its a tenant that is better than nothing.

Erin - In my state Realtors are required to pass along every offer. You can check with your local Realtors Association. The other thing you can do is go to the local County Registrar's office or Tax office and get the owner's information and mail him your offer yourself. Remember the Realtor may not get her commission if its not an actual sale which could account for her reluctance.
Our only other option is to get a piece of raw land and drop a trailer on it and start from scratch with building the property up. the only problem with that is hubby and I are learning everything as we go and I am thinking this way might discourage him.
